about

NYC-based sensation Wassu has already earned strong early consideration for breakthrough artist of 2020 in our ranks, given the contribution of his profoundly moving "Lost" EP and "Dhavu" single in recent months. His latest on Silk Music is another three-track offering, which showcases his trademark mixture of organic (occasionally driving) grooves and wistful, moving melodies.

Wassu's new EP begins with "Overcome," a deep and dark underground prog house stormer. A hypnotic synth line soars atop a minimalistic drum pattern; even the stripped-down moments feel alive with energy, as rhythmic, atmospheric, and even vocal flourishes greatly color the soundscape. The eventual breakdown is a welcome respite, as stirring strings and pitched-down vocal effects elicit a state of deep reflection in the listener. With only a brief pause, the energy picks back once more, this time with the added punch of a rolling bassline.

The vocal-driven "Memories" reveals another dimension in Wassu's compositional arsenal, as he succeeds in deftly crafting a genre-bending production that blends elements of disco, indie house, and progressive. The tune begins with the blissful, transportive atmospheric effects of a late summer day by the sea; the waves seem to almost literally wash over the groove, which bolsters the relaxing (and rapturous) mood of the song. Silk Music newcomer LEFTI delivers the track's main motif: the robotically processed main vocal refrain, which proves as refreshing (and intoxicating) as an end-of-day mojito. Suddenly, jubilant chords, including a trumpet layer, explode across the soundscape; the sentimentality established during the breakdowns swiftly evolves into anthemic moments of empowerment. When the climax comes in for the final time, the organic percussions make a tasteful return and lock the track back into earthbound reality.

Wassu's EP concludes with the gentle seaside number "Ocean's Mist." Natural percussive elements maintain an exceedingly chilled drum pattern throughout the arrangement, as delicate melodic elements and seaside effects seep into the soundscape. The arrangement allows each element to ebb and flow on its own accord, creating an aural experience that is perfectly in sync with the peaceful monotony of the tides. In spite of the minimalistic approach, every bar drips with emotional resonance and evokes our most transcendent past experiences by the shore.
